Wrapping up the IBU World Championship

French team Hochfilzen
The world’s greatest biathletes arrived in Hochfilzen, Austria to take part in the IBU World Championship. Medals won at this competition are the most coveted and highly prized of the whole biathlon season, and all the training and preparation led up to this event.

The competitors were greeted by thousands of keen fans, eager to watch their favourites compete in the 11 disciplines set over 9 days. Conditions were ideal, with sunny and windless skies promising close competition and exciting battles for the medal positions.

Expectations were riding high on the ELEY sponsored French Team. Martin Fourcade has bordered on unbeatable at times this season, and was ranked number one with a big lead over the competition. As the World Championships got underway his consistency was as impressive as his skiing and shooting: he medalled in the first five events, demonstrating his mastery of Sprint, Pursuit, Individual, and the Mixed and Individual Relay events. In the Men’s Pursuit Martin retained his Gold crown, winning the race with a comfortable lead and with French flag in hand.

The French women also shone. Anais Chevalier won Bronze in the Sprint, shooting clean to take her first ever World Championship medal. Anais was delighted with her medal, saying “I thought I was capable of doing this; I am very happy to have succeeded”.

The Relay events showed the great strength in depth of the French, with Silver in the Mixed Relay and Men’s Relay, and Bronze in the Women’s event. Every athlete put in a great performance, and all were rewarded on the podium.

Simon Schempp from Germany was another stand-out star of the World Championships. The ELEY shooter first helped the Mixed Relay team to Gold after a thrilling race, finishing just 2.2 seconds in front of France. His first Individual World Championship Gold followed in the Mass Start. Perfect shooting brought him to the front of the pack, and he powered away on the final uphill stretch to victory.

In all nine medals went to ELEY shooters at the IBU World Championships - congratulations!
