Multiple Medals in Rio

It was the first .22LR event at the ISSF World Cup Rio, and the beginning of the Olympic Games test event today on the range. The adrenalin was pumping as the Men’s 50m Pistol qualification began with 80% of the athletes using ELEY.

After an exciting qualification, 7 out of the 8 competitors who went through to the final were using ELEY.

The finalists were: Jongoh Jin (KOR), Zhiwei Wang (CHN), Oleh Omelchuk (UKR), Jitu Rai (IND), Jiajie Mai (CHN), Wei Pang (CHN), Jay Shi (USA), Cheongyong Kim (KOR).

With three Chinese athletes and two Korean athletes in the final, these two nations dominated with competitors building up the atmosphere in the finals hall.

The audience were anticipating a great final with the current Olympic and World Champion leading the in the qualification throughout. The majority of the other competitors in this competition are multi medallists at this event, at world championships and world cups and the standard really showed.

For two of the athletes it was their first finals in a world cup competition which proved to be a great test for the newly USA team qualified competitor Shi, after finishing 13th last month in the world cup in Bangkok.

After two series of three shots, Kim was first to leave the competition in 8th place. Following him in 7th was Shi, 6th place went to Rai, 5th place went to Pang and 4th place went to Mai.

It was then down to the final few shots of the competition to decide the podium positions, it was very tense. In the end it was Wang who took the Bronze with final score of 169.7. After a dramatic finish between the last two athletes, Jin took the Silver with a final score of 189.4 and Omelchuk took the Gold with 191.3.
