Arrivederci Nicco!

Niccolo Campriani has announced his retirement at the age of 29. The Italian shooter leaves the shooting sports at the pinnacle of his career, being currently ranked world number one in Air Rifle and number two in Men’s 3P.

In Rio 2016 Nicco became the most successful shooter in the history of the games. His two Gold medals were unprecedented and followed a Gold and Silver in London 2012. Nicco’s success was recognised with the coveted 2016 ISSF Shooter of the Year award, his second title after winning back in 2012. After such a momentous year, with nothing else to prove and little else to win, Nicco retired from competitive shooting.

Nicco’s Olympic medals are the highlight of a career which spans 16 years. Also among his accolades are winning the 2010 World Championship, 7 World Cup Final medals, 15 World Cup medals (including 8 Golds), and 8 European Championship medals. Silver at the inaugural 2015 European Games in Baku rounds out an extraordinary shooting CV.

ELEY have sponsored Nicco for many years, and we are proud and honoured to have played a part in his success. Nicco, together with girlfriend and current Women’s 3P World Champion Petra Zublasing, is a paragon of excellence and an inspiration for the new generation of shooters.

Nicco said to ELEY: “I have no intention of shooting in the near future but I also think that my retirement is more like the one Michael Jordan had in 1993, when he said retiring means you can do anything you want from that day on. If I feel the desire to come back and shoot again maybe that’s what I’ll do, maybe that’s the challenge that I’ll need someday down the road.”

Many retired champions have been drawn back into competition, so time will tell if Nicco will return to defend his titles in 2018 and beyond. Regardless of what the future holds, ELEY thank Nicco for all his support and wish him well.
