50m Rifle 3 Positions 3x40 Men

This discipline is often referred to as either 3P, Men’s 3 Positions or 3 x 40. The discipline is a combination of three different shooting positions Prone, Standing and Kneeling, and always carried out in that order. The name 3 x 40 comes from the fact 40 shots of .22 ammunition are fired from 50 meters in each shooting position.

The Men’s 50m 3 x 40 is both an Olympic and International Shooting Sports Federation (ISSF) recognised discipline, there is a women’s version of the discipline called 3 x 20.

In a world level completion such as a World Cup, competitors would first enter into the elimination round and would fire 40 shots in each position. The allotted time for this event is 3hr 20mins (45mins prone + 10min changeover + 75mins standing + 10min changover + 60mins kneeling). Each shot has a value ranging from the lowest, 0, to the  highest, 10. If the competitor achieves a high enough score over the 120 shots then they go through to compete in the qualification round which again consists of 3 x 40 shots in all 3 positions but starting from a clean slate. The shooter is aiming to qualify within the top 8 in order to get into the final. The final consists of 10 shots in the standing position but this time the scoring changes slightly. Decimals are introduced. A shot touching the 10 ring is classed as a 10.0 and a shot dead centre is gauged a 10.9 with everything in between being graduated. The competitor's final score is added to their qualification score to establish first, second and third places.
